Treating Vaginal Dryness Symptoms

Wouldn’t it be nice if vaginal atrophy and other menopause concerns came with a ‘how to deal’ instruction manual? Well, for at least one symptom, it does. Thin, dry vaginal and vulvar tissues, medically termed vulvovaginal atrophy (VVA), can be a major cause of painful intercourse and it affects up to 45% of postmenopausal women. However, only a minority of women seeks help or is offered help by their medical providers for these symptoms. Until now, postmenopausal women suffering from symptoms like vaginal dryness have received little medical guidance on how best to treat it.

According to the guidelines released by The North American Menopause Society (NAMS), using non-hormonal vaginal lubricants and long-acting vaginal moisturizers are first-line therapies for the treatment of this vaginal dryness symptom.

Treating Vaginal Atrophy Symptom #1: Vaginal Dryness

Hormone-free lubricants are recommended for immediate use during intercourse. Be aware of the ingredients in lubes as even non-hormonal options may contain irritants. Lubes are popular for temporary relief when needed in the moment.

A long acting moisturizer, on the other hand, is intended to change the water content of and moisturize vaginal tissue, making them more elastic and thicker with an enhanced ability to maintain fluid that will in turn reduce friction. Clinical studies have shown that moisturizers actually replenishes moisture and decreases painful intercourse. This treatment option not only helps address vaginal dryness, but it also gives women the freedom and fulfillment that comes with it. Lubes may be used in conjunction with moisturizer if needed for additional lubrication during sex.

For every woman, the choice of treatment for VVA depends on her preferences, needs and consultation with her physician. Lubricants and a long-lasting, hormone-free vaginal moisturizer can do much as a first-line therapy to enhance postmenopausal women’s quality of life in a safe and effective way. Women experiencing vaginal atrophy symptoms shouldn’t suffer in silence-- researching treatment options and, of course, discussing them with a doctor will help you rediscover comfort.
